Stepping out of performing and into ministry wasn't something I ever planned for myself. I was comfortable and content with my career in professional theatre. It not only paid the bills but also let me live out my passion every day. My kids even joined in, making it a family affair.
In my 19th year of performing, everything changed with a single phone call from my church pastor. He asked if I would consider becoming the children’s director. I've always loved working with kids and had volunteered in children's ministry before, but I never imagined leading it.
After spending some time in prayer and quietly listening to God’s guidance, I decided to accept the position. I thought saying yes was the hardest part, but then the doubts crept in at night. "I’m not cut out for this," "Why did he choose me?" "I can't do it," "I’m not qualified," were the thoughts racing through my mind.
If I had given in to those fears, I wouldn’t be here today, 10 years later, still serving God in ministry.
In Psalm 56:3, truth says, "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee."
Friend, fear may be holding you back.
Consider This:
God always wants to give you more, to advance you further into new life, purpose, and freedom. But because of those fearful thoughts, the ones that say, “I’m not good enough”, “What will people think”, “I’m probably gonna fail”, you may have one foot on the gas and one on the brakes, causing you to stay stalled.
When we acknowledge that fear to God, bringing it into the light, it holds less power over us, and allows us to take our foot off the brake and trust God with how he’s going to bring those dreams you’ve dreamt, promises He’s whispered, and new freedom and life into reality.
Pray with me?
Lord, It seems that a lot of times fear is a companion when we’re thinking of stepping into the new. Help bring us awareness when those feelings do come so that when we recognize that it’s happening we talk to you about it so we can move forward into what you have for us!
In Jesus Name,
Amen.
