If you ever find yourself in Northeast Iowa looking for something to do, a day trip to Elkader may be in order. With a population of about 1200, this lovely town is well worth a visit.
Pedretti’s Bakery
Pedretti's is a local favorite, and a must stop. It looks like your favorite old-time bakery, with display shelves full of goodies.
The bakery offers more than 40 varieties of pastries as well as fresh-baked breads, rolls, buns, donuts, and cookies daily. They have a very friendly staff that goes above and beyond for their customers.
Three-generations of the Pedretti family have worked in the bakery that Joe and Mary Pedretti opened in 1968. Through the decades Pedrett's Bakery has been renovated and remodeled, but still remains a family owned bakery.
Christopher Reimer, Joe & Mary's grandson now heads the bakery.
Pedretti's has a special event every year during Elkader Sweet Corn Days. The bakery sponsors a donut hole eating contest in late July. It is held on the street right in front of the bakery. We had some great treats from this bakery, and would definitely go back if ever in the area again.Turkey River Mall
Across the street from Pedretti's Bakery is the Turkey River Mall, the area’s leading antique store serving northeast Iowa since 2004.
It was previously an old historic hotel (dated 1897) and now is home to over 70 vendors bringing history to life through a captivating blend of old, new, and gently-used treasures.
The mall covers 14,000 square feet and is three floors plus a basement. They specialize in primitives, antiques, vintage items, gifts and collectibles, apparel, shoes, jewelry, yard art, home décor, a rock shop and much more. It is not just a store—but a journey through time.
The Takeaway
It's a very scenic area located along the Turkey River, and in the valleys and bluffs known as Iowa's Little Switzerland. There are many shopping, historical, recreational, and food-related activities. I hope to make it back to Elkader sometime in the future.
